Your Love, O Lord

by John Miner

Background

The source of the lyrics of this song begin at verse 5 of Psalm 36. However, the first 4 verses of this Psalm of David, the servant of the Lord, should cause us to soberly and humbly investigate our hearts, plans, words and actions. We must examine whether we think of ourselves too highly and if we actually deceive ourselves by not recognizing our own sins and shortcomings. Do we have a healthy fear of God? Are we willing to see the unvarnished truth about ourselves from God’s perspective and reject wickedness in us?

Psalm 36 (NIV)
1 I have a message from God in my heart
concerning the sinfulness of the wicked:
There is no fear of God before their eyes.
2 In their own eyes they flatter themselves
too much to detect or hate their sin.
3 The words of their mouths are wicked and deceitful;
they fail to act wisely or do good.
4 Even on their beds they plot evil;
they commit themselves to a sinful course
and do not reject what is wrong.

By contrast, in verse 5, David launches into a series of lofty and picturesque descriptions of the characteristics of God the Father, and His relationship to His creation. Join me in singing of His love, faithfulness, righteousness, justice, and many more good qualities in this joyous, upbeat, and banjo driven song.

For with You, Lord, is the fountain of life
And in Your light – we see light
Extend Your love to those who know You
Salvation to – the upright in heart!
