You Knew My Name
Background
“You Knew My Name” was inspired by the testimony of a good friend, Mark Stupke, who was asked to share his “God-story” with our congregation in fall 2021. I have known Mark and have played worship music with him (Mark plays drums and percussion very well) for many years. While I had heard about some of Mark’s youthful exploits, he told a gripping story of how God captured him when he was a confused, adventuresome, rebellious, and headstrong young man. Mark vividly described several dramatic scenes that are just waiting to be made into a movie.
After hearing Mark’s story, I was left with the phrase, “God knew my name”. I’m not even sure if Mark used these exact words, but this was the essence that was planted in my brain. Soon, this phrase developed into, “before I knew you, you knew my name”, and after living with this concept for a few more weeks, I felt compelled to try writing this song. "You Knew My Name", is driven by a heavy compliment of drums and Latin percussion rhythms which can be taken as my homage to Mark. Thanks Mark, you are an example and a blessing to many.
The song is not intended to reflect specific events of Mark’s life story, but rather, as I said earlier, it was inspired by his story. It contains examples of how God may pursue any of us who can now say, “while I was yet lost, I was ‘rescued by Your grace, and You knew my name’”.
